Die Nachrichtenberichterstattung der Massenmedien ist ein Gegenstand, bei dem in der Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft wohl am frühesten Vergleiche angestellt worden sind. Dieser Forschungsbereich besitzt somit unter denjenigen, die im vorliegenden Band behandelt werden, die längste Tradition. Dies hat zunächst einmal damit zu tun, dass die Nachrichtenberichterstattung den Kerninhalt der Massenmedien, seitdem es diese gibt, ausmacht(e). Damit drängte sich die Frage auf, was die Menschen aus diesen Medien über die Welt erfahren und was sie darüber wissen (können). Denn durch die Medien werden sie ja mit Informationen von jenseits ihrer eigenen Lebenssphäre versorgt. Über diese Primärfunktion hinaus kann man Nachrichten aber auch auffassen als den „gemeinsamen Nenner, auf dessen Grundlage politische Kommunikation international verglichen werden kann“ (Rössler 2003: 305).
