Dass transnationale Religionsverbände als „indirekte Mächte“ in staatspolitische Belange hineinregieren können, ist spätestens seit Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) ein klassisches Problem westlicher Staatstheorien. Ebenso bedeutsam ist allerdings auch die (Selbst-) Instrumentalisierung religiöser Akteure für die Politik von Staaten, nationalistischen Bewegungen und ethnischen Gemeinschaften. Gegenstand der folgenden Ausführungen ist das Zusammenspiel zweier Ebenen dieser Problematik im Nahen Osten, nämlich des „interreligiösen Dialogs“ zwischen Christen, Muslimen und Juden sowie den Bemühungen um Frieden im Nahen Osten.
