Die Frage, ob Bündnisse Kriege provozieren oder verhindern, ist Gegenstand intensiver Forschung moderner Sozialwissenschaften. Vertreter der realistischen und der liberalen Schule kommen dabei zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen. Realisten tendieren dazu, Bündnisse als Teil des Mächtegleichgewichts zur Aufrechterhaltung von Frieden zu sehen. Liberale hingegen, die in der Tradition von Thomas Paine, Immanuel Kant und Woodrow Wilson stehen, sehen in Militärbündnissen eine Bedrohung des Friedens, weil sie einen Eskalationsmechanismus in den Krieg darstellen können.
