Zusammenfassung

Der Terrorismus gehört zu jenen Phänomenen der Gesellschaft, die die soziologische Analyse schon deswegen herausfordern, weil man zögern muss, ihm die Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, die er für sich reklamiert. Ist nicht jedes Wort über den Terrorismus bereits eines zu viel, wenn man es hier mit einer Strategie zu tun hat, die physische Gewalt ausübt, um symbolische Effekte zu erzielen, zu denen nicht zuletzt das Ausmaß gehört, in dem er ernst genommen wird? Insofern ist es vielleicht nicht nur als Manko zu verstehen, wenn die Soziologie den Terrorismus lange Zeit als historisches wie als modernes Phänomen eher vernachlässigt hat (siehe Ahmad 2002; Ahmad u. Howell 2003). Nicht auszuschließen ist, dass hier notgedrungen eher implizit als explizit, in der Form einer latent gehaltenen Beobachtung, eine bereits zur Sache gehörende Vorsicht am Werke ist.
