Abstract
This review of research on the development of Israeli adolescents opens with a short introduction of Israel and its adolescents and proceeds with reporting about research regarding six issues. The first three topics are of special relevance to the Israeli context: (1) Jewish-Arab relationships, including peace education, (2) the developmental effect of military service, and (3) adolescent new immigrants. Although prompted by local concerns, each also contributes to general knowledge such as the asymmetry between majority and minority (peace education), psychological development in a constrained hierarchical setting (military service), and conditions for adjustment to major transition (adolescent new immigrants). The other three issues reflect major trends in world research on adolescent development and comprise: (4) the self, including studies on self image, identity and future orientation, (5) family and peer relationships, including work on adolescents’ relationships with parents, siblings and peers, and romantic relationships, and (6) education and schooling, including research on the gifted.
