„Drogenkriege“, Kreuzzüge gegen Drogen und andere Phasen besonderer öffentlicher Besorgnis bezüglich Drogen sind nie nur Reaktionen auf die vielfältigen Probleme, die Menschen mit Drogen haben können. Drogenängste sind ein wiederkehrendes kulturelles und politisches Phänomen, das für sich selbst steht und das daher auch in Bezug auf seine Begrifflichkeit aus soziologischer Perspektive verstanden werden muss. Es ist bedeutsam zu verstehen, warum Menschen Drogen nehmen und warum manche von ihnen Probleme entwickeln, die mit diesem Konsum in Zusammenhang stehen. Aber diesem Aufsatz liegt die Annahme zugrunde, dass es ebenso bedeutsam ist, die Schemata, denen die akuten gesellschaftlichen Sorgen bezüglich Drogen und Drogenkonsum unterliegen, zu verstehen. Dies scheint besonders für die US-Gesellschaft zu gelten, die eine Historie von Anti-Drogen-Kreuzzügen und eine Reihe repressiver Anti-Drogengesetze kennt.
