Soziales Kapital bzw. Sozialkapital hat sich in der Sozialforschung zu einem gangigen und weit verbreiteten Begriff entwickelt. Die Bezeichnung soziales Kapital wurde von verschiedenen Forschern mit unterschiedlichem theoretischen Hintergrund bei der Untersuchung sozialer Ungleichheit entwickelt.1 Pierre Bourdieu definierte im Zusammenhang sozialer Mobilitat Sozialkapital als Gegenstuck zum kulturellen Kapital (1983),2 James Coleman definierte zunachst im Rahmen der Bildungsforschung soziales Kapital als Gegenstuck zum Humankapital (1988).3 In Fortentwicklung des ,Embeddedness-Ansatzes“ (Granovetter 1973) wurde soziales Kapital in der Netzwerkforschung als Ressource fur die berufliche Mobilitat definiert (Flap/de Graaf 1986, Lin/Ensel/Vaughn 1981). Dabei wird auf Beziehungen zu Bekannten abgehoben, die moglicherweise von Nutzen sein konnen, indem sie im Bedarfsfalle aktiviert werden.4 Auch in der Migrationsforschung wird soziales Kapital als Ressource von Migranten betrachtet (Portes/Sensenbrenner 1993, siehe unten). Infolge der Studien von Robert Putnam zur sozialen und politischen Partizipation in Italien (1993) und den USA (1995, 2001)5 hat sich ein weiteres Anwendungsfeld für den Begriff des sozialen Kapitals entwickelt: die Untersuchung der Zivilgesellschaft im interkulturellen und internatinalen Vergleich.
