Der prägende Einfluss sozialer Ungleichheit auf Lebensqualität und Gesundheit wird nicht vollständig sichtbar, wenn Ungleichheit ausschlie\lich auf der Individualebene sozialer Statusmerkmale von Personen untersucht wird. Vielmehr bedarf es einer Ausweitung der Analyse auf makrosoziale Kontexte, in denen individuelle Statusdifferenzierungen ihre Wirkung entfalten. Der Terminus „soziales Kapital“ bezeichnet einen solchen makrosozialen Kontext. In diesem Kapitel wird das Zusammenspiel von sozialem Kapital, sozialer Ungleichheit und Gesundheit untersucht. Dabei ist es unerlässlich, einleitend zu klären, was wir eigentlich meinen, wenn wir den Begriff „Gesellschaft“ verwenden.
