Ökonomen sind stolz auf die Effizienz eigensinniger Märkte. Je größer die Eigensinnigkeit der Märkte, so wird postuliert, desto effizienter nicht nur die einfach zu quantifizierenden unmittelbaren Funktionen des Marktes, sondern auch die mittelbaren, „Nebenwirkungen“ für die Gesellschaft. Über die Nebenwirkungen kann man sich nur sehr schwer verständigen—je nachdem welche Folgen herausgestrichen werden, beispielsweise die angeblich befreienden Wirkungen oder die anscheinend soziale Ungleichheiten stärkenden Konsequenzen eigensinniger Märkte. Zu den unmittelbaren Aufgaben der Märkte gehüren etwa ihre Preisbestimmungsfunktion und die effiziente Allokation von Ressourcen.
