Gegenstand dieses Kapitels ist die Theorie sozialer Klassen: Ich will zur letztendlichen Klärung der Frage beitragen, warum soziale Klassen existieren. Ich gehe dabei von einer Art der Konzeptualisierung von Klassen — und damit wiederum einer Anwendbarkeit des Begriffs „Klasse“ in der empirischen Forschung —aus, die ich mit einer Reihe von Kollegen über die letzten 30 Jahre entwickelt habe. Die grundlegende Idee, die verfolgt wurde, ist die, dass Klassenpositionen —in einer Art, die im Weiteren erklärt werden soll — als Positionen verstanden werden können, die durch Beschäftigungsverhältnisse definiert werden. Schrittweise wurde ein „Klassenschema“ erarbeitet, das Klassenkategorien in Bezug auf Beschäftigungsverhältnisse unterscheidet und das in der Forschung mit Hilfe von Informationen hinsichtlich Beschäftigungsform und Arbeit durchgeführt werden kann.
