Zusammenfassung

Die Sozialforschung über arbeitende Kinder und Heranwachsende in den USA ist bei uns bisher so gut wie nicht wahrgenommen worden. Dies ist insofern bedauerlich, als in den USA seit mehr als 30 Jahren eine breite sozialwissenschaftliche Debatte über dieses Thema geführt wird, die sich teilweise wohltuend vom Schematismus der Fragestellungen und der methodischen Schlichtheit der bisher in Deutschland veranstalteten Forschung unterscheidet.

“... some people just rely on their parents. ... When I get older I want to say I’ve saved this money for myself; my mama didn’t give it to me. The rich kids, they know they’ve got money, so they just get what they want; they don’t give a darn. I want to be out making my own money.”

“I think every person, even though they go to school, should have some type of job, even if it’s just working on Saturdays. I think it teaches you a lot. ... A lot of people say I have a lot of insight dealing with people; they tell me I should be a social worker or something like that, but that comes from me working.”1
