Von ihren ersten europäischen Anfängen bis zu ihrer gegenwärtigen internationalen Entwicklung war und ist die Soziologie eine historisch und vergleichend orientierte Disziplin. Im Kern treibt sie die Leitidee, die Prozesse des sozialen Wandels in der sich modernisierenden und sich nun zunehmend globalisierenden Welt zu beschreiben, zu verstehen und zu erklären. Die Bezugspunkte der Soziologie waren für lange Zeit die sich modernisierenden Gesellschaften zunächst in (West-)Europa und dann in Nordamerika, aber mit der Dekolonialisierung und Entiwcklung der nicht-westlichen Weltregionen kommen auch zunehmend die nicht-westlichen, häufig postkolonialen Gesellschaften sowie die damit einhergehenden, wechselseitig sich intensivierenden Beziehungsverhältnisse zwischen den westlichen und nicht-westlichen Gesellschaften in einer sich globalisierenden Welt ins Blickfeld. Mit diesen sich wandelnden Bezugspunkten hat sich zugleich aus einer Vielzahl dominant national angelegter Soziologien eine zunehmend international orientierte und verstärkt global ausgerichtete Soziologie entwickelt (Abu-Lughod 1999, Gulbenkian Commission 1996).
