Zusammenfassung
Alle Versuche der Messung der Schreiblesefähigkeit von Erwachsenen definieren ein Mindestniveau, unterhalb dessen Analphabetismus/illiteracy anzunehmen ist. Gegenwärtig gibt es 781 Millionen illiterate Erwachsene auf der Erde. Die meisten davon leben in den Entwicklungsländern. In der Geschichte der Alphabetisierungsbemühungen wechselten sich unterschiedliche Schwerpunkte ab, z. B. functional literacy, Alphabetisierung als Bewusstseinsbildung, Alphabetisierung im Kontext der education for all. Sprachen und Schriftsysteme wirken auf die Alphabetisierung ein. Maßnahmeformen sind: Massenkampagnen, umfassende nationale Angebotsprogramme, lokale Schwerpunktprogramme. Im Ganzen gilt: Die Literalität der Weltbevölkerung schreitet voran.
