Zusammenfassung

Die Ordnung des Verhältnisses von Religion und Politik kann als eine der zentralen Achsen der europäischen Geschichte von der Römerzeit bis ins 21. Jahrhundert betrachtet werden. Zwar galten nach dem 2. Weltkrieg mit dem Durchbruch der Demokratie sowie ihrer Anerkennung als legitime Herrschaftsform im zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil (1962-65) die grundlegenden Aspekte dieses Verhältnisses als geregelt.
