Am 9. Januar 2011 entschieden sich die Bewohner des Südsudan mit einer überwältigenden Mehrheit von 98 Prozent der Wählerstimmen für die staatliche Unabhängigkeit. Genau sechs Monate später wurde die Republik Südsudan jüngstes Mitglied der Staatengemeinschaft.
