Zusammenfassung
Der Artikel beschreibt die historische Entwicklung der Vizepräsidentschaft in den USA und analysiert die Rolle der Running Mates im Wahlkampf Präsidentschaftswahlkampf 2012. Insbesondere wird diese Rolle theoretisch gefasst und funktional geordnet. Im Vergleich der beiden Kandidaten wird deutlich, dass sie eher klassische Rollen ausgefüllt haben – wenn auch auf unterschiedliche Art und mit unterschiedlichem Erfolg. So ist jeweils eine Ausgleichsfunktion zu beobachten, während bei der wichtigen do no harm-Funktion Differenzen deutlich werden. Weitere Funktionen werden diskutiert.

In diesem Fall nominiert der Präsident einen neuen Vizepräsidenten, der mit einfachen Mehrheiten im Senat und Repräsentantenhaus bestätigt werden muss. Dies ist seit 1965 zweimal angewendet worden, nämlich 1973 (Rücktritt von Spiro Agnew und Ernennung von Gerald Ford) und 1974 (Nachfolge Nixon-Ford und Ernennung von Nelson Rockefeller); Twenty-fifth Amendment, Sec. 2. Der Kongress verabschiedete das Amendment 1965, 1967 trat es nach der Ratifizierung durch die Einzelstaaten in Kraft.

Reagan, Clinton, Georg W. Bush, Obama. Die Ausnahme ist der erfahrene Insider George H. W. Bush. Die vier Vizepräsidenten Bush, Gore, Cheney und Biden verfügten alle über extensive Erfahrung mit Washington.
