Gemeinnütziges Engagement Jugendlicher – Ein Beitrag zum Positive Youth Development?

Does Community Service Contribute to Positive Youth Development?

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the conditions of community service that might provide experiences to foster positive development of adolescents. Based on the Community Service Theory (CST) we argue that especially being exposed to new world views and ideas as well as opportunities to experience self-efficacy in helping behavior make volunteer work an important social setting to promote positive youth development. Cross-sectional data from N = 2.408 youths seem to support this positive influence of service if it is done in direct contact with people in need.
