Vom „Versehrtensport“ zu den Paralympics: Facetten der Entwicklung

Zusammenfassung

Die historischen Anfänge der paralympischen Bewegung gehen in die 40er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts zurück: 1948 wurden in England erstmalig die „Stoke- Mandeville-Spiele“ für „Gelähmte“ abgehalten.1 Ins Leben gerufen wurden die als jährliche Sportfeste angelegten Spiele von dem aus Deutschland emigrierten Mediziner Ludwig Guttmann, der vier Jahre zuvor im Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury ein Zentrum für Querschnittsgelähmte eröffnet hatte.
