Nationale Identität setzt sich nicht nur aus sehr vielfältigen Komponenten zusammen, sondern tritt auch in sehr unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen auf. In der Forschung wird daher zwischen „positiv, demokratisch erwünschten“ und „negativ, demokratisch unerwünschten“ (Cohrs et al. 2004: 202) Formen nationaler Identifikation unterschieden.
