Wie der angesehene Terrorismusforscher Walter Laqueur im Jahre 2003 anmerkte, ist die „Disziplin der Terrorismusforschung neueren Datums“ (Laqueur 2003, S. 207). Dies gilt insbesondere für Forschungen zum Thema maritimer Terrorismus, die bis auf sehr wenige Ausnahmen auf die letzte Dekade beschränkt sind.
