Abstract
Reception study deals with the way information is shared by scholars. Conducted in a historical manner, it sheds light on how scientific communication takes place in practice. Upon its publication, Jürgen Habermas’ The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere (orig. Strukturwandel der Öffentlichkeit, 1962) was ignored by media scholars in West Germany, and it took some 30 years for the book to gain recognition in the English-speaking camp of the field. The paper takes up the Finnish reception of Strukturwandel to illustrate how different contextual factors, such as prevailing scholarly paradigms, national academic traditions, political and other interests of media scholars, and language skills, have resulted in different assessments of the content and worth of Habermas’ classic. First, the general history of the reception of the book in Finland in the 1970s and 1980s is described. Then, five interpretive strategies and discourses are taken up to specify how Habermas has been understood after 1990 and what have been the reasons for this. In conclusion, a plea is made for cosmopolitanism in countering “English-only media studies” that, during the past 10–20 years, has more and more become the norm.

In a preparatory paper to Communication and Democracy, Nieminen (2000 [1995], pp. 114–115) refers to the non-British reception of Habermas, so he does not ignore its existence. The reason for excluding it from the monograph has to be the fact he is addressing an Anglo-Saxon scholarly audience not always very hospitable to “foreign” research literature.

Translations of Frankfurt School authors, especially those of Adorno, are notoriously of varying quality. It has been argued, for instance, that the Italian versions of both Dialectic of Enlightenment and Negative Dialectic are incomprehensible (see Kohlmann and Pertucciani 1999, p. 90).
