Abstract

A huge amount of scholarly work dealing with nationalism and patriotism has been published since the end of World War II (Jansen and Borggräfe, 2007; Delanty and O’Mahony, 2002). Despite considerable efforts, separation of both concepts is not convincing which shows up in unsatisfactory empirical results (Heinrich and Schmidt, 2008). Neither theoretically nor empirically do we knowwhether nationalism and patriotism are independent factors or not. Furthermore, it is conceivable that both concepts represent the contrasting poles of one dimension (Heinrich and Werner, 2008, p. 5).
