Zusammenfassung
Die deutsche Kommunikationswissenschaft und die Ethnographie verbindet bislang keine innige Beziehung. In großen Teilen der fachspezifischen Einführungen in qualitative Methoden wird sie ausgelassen oder gar des Faches verwiesen: „Kommunikationswissenschaftler sind keine Ethnografen, die über Jahre in einer bestimmten Gemeinschaft leben wollen und müssen.“ (Meyen et al. 2011, S. 126) Die Ethnographie ist jedoch weder Fachmethode der Ethnologie, noch für die Erforschung des (national-) kulturell Fremden reserviert. In einer Reihe anderer Disziplinen bis hin zu den Wirtschaftswissenschaften wird ethnographisch gearbeitet (Neyland 2008, S. 1), wobei viele Forschungsvorhaben weder auf fremde Kulturen abzielen, noch durch jahrelangen Aufenthalt im Feld gekennzeichnet sind.
Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt dar, was Ethnographie ausmacht und welchen Nutzen ethnographische Verfahren bei der Erforschung der Kommunikation von Organisationen und insbesondere Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) haben. Er schließt mit einem Beispiel ab, in dem Kommunikationskampagnen gegen weibliche Genitalverstümmelung durch vier tansanische NGOs ethnographisch erforscht wurden (Danelzik 2012). Dieses Beispiel verdeutlicht methodische Entscheidungsprozesse im Rahmen ethnographischer Forschung, weist auf verschiedene Herausforderungen hin und zeigt auf, welchen einzigartigen Erkenntnisgewinn die Ethnographie gegenüber anderen Methoden bieten kann.
Nicht alle Aspekte des ethnographischen Forschens können in diesem Überblicksartikel abgedeckt werden: Dies betrifft Fragen der Datenauswertung und -darstellung (vgl. dazu etwa Hammersley und Atkinson 2007, S. 158ff.), die sehr kontextabhängige Ethik ethnographischen Forschens (Ferdinand et al. 2007) sowie die stark erkenntnis- und wissenschaftstheoretisch geprägte Diskussion um Repräsentation und Realismus, die in Bezug auf die Ethnographie intensiv geführt wird (van Maanen 1995; Marcus 2000; Clifford et al. 2010) und zu einer Abkehr der meisten EthnographInnen von realistischen und positivistischen Positionen geführt hat. Dieser Beitrag verfolgt das Ziel, aufzuzeigen, wie die Kommunikationswissenschaft im Allgemeinen und die Organisationskommunikationsforschung im Besonderen von der Ethnographie profitieren können, ohne dabei Herausforderungen und Nachteile der Ethnographie zu unterschlagen.
