Zusammenfassung
Chrétien de Troyes konnte seine Hauptkenntnisse über Arthur unmittelbar aus Geoffreys ›Historia‹ und aus Wace entnehmen; es muß aber doch als sicher gelten, daß die Arthurdichtung nicht einen so stürmischen Aufschwung hätte nehmen können, wären die Zeitumstände dafür nicht besonders geeignet gewesen und hätte es nicht auch eine weit verbreitete mündliche Überlieferung von Arthursagen gegeben.
