Zusammenfassung
Besteht zwischen zwei Punkten der Erdoberfläche gegenseitige Sicht, so können wir die Raumentfernung mit Hilfe von Mikro- oder Lichtwellen von jedem der Punkte aus messen. Wir sprechen von mittleren Entfernungen, wenn diese den Seiten der Triangulation erster Ordnung entsprechen, also durchschnittlich um 40–50 km liegen und ausnahmsweise 80–100 km erreichen.
