Abstract

This study has presented a corpus-based approach to the behavioural profile of syntactically dependent modalised clauses. The motivation was that corpus-based research on modal verbs had thus far disregarded differences in the clausal integration of modal verbs. Therefore, the study has employed data from the BNC and has proceeded from a monofactorial analysis to a multi-factorial analysis, with a replication study being conducted to increase reliability.
