Abstract
Generally speaking, (a) modal auxiliaries need to be distinguished from (b) non-auxiliary modal verbs (lexical modal verbs) and (c) non-verbal modal expressions (i.e. modal expressions belonging to a word class other than auxiliary verbs or lexical verbs).
