Zussamenfassung
Die wissenschaftliche Untersuchung populärer Kultur als eigener Forschungsgegenstand beginnt mit der Gründung des Birminghamer Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies im Jahr 1964 und dem 1967/68 eingerichteten Journal of Popular Culture. Weitere Bausteine zu einer Theorie des Populären sind vor allem in den zahlreichen Studien zur Massenkultur und Kulturindustrie enthalten.
