Obwohl Puccini nach Fertigstellung von Il trittico an einer weiteren Zusammenarbeit mit Giovacchino Forzano gelegen war und man unter anderem über den später von Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari vertonten Sly-Stoff beriet, bezog er auch wieder andere ihm nahestehende Librettisten in die Stoffsuche mit ein.
