Während der Probenphase für die englische Erstaufführung von Tosca am Londoner Covent Garden besuchte Puccini am 21. Juni 1900 das Duke of York’s Theatre, wo seit April David Belascos neuer Broadway- Import, die einaktige Tragödie Madame Butterfly mit Evelyn Millard in der Titelrolle, im Anschluss an die Komödie Miss Hobbs von Jerome K. Jerome gespielt wurde.
