Herztier entstand in den 1990er Jahren nach Herta Müllers Emigration in die Bundesrepublik. Der Roman wurde 1994 veröffentlicht, nachdem Müller mit Reisende auf einem Bein (Erzählung über die Ausreise), Der Teufel sitzt im Spiegel (Essays), Hunger und Seide (Reportagen) und Der Wächter nimmt seinen kamm (Collagen) neue Schreibformen ausprobiert hatte, von denen manche ästhetischen Verfahren, zum Beispiel Collagen, Eingang in Herztier gefunden haben.
