Vor allem international gilt W. G. Sebald als Holocaust- Autor. Sowohl die publizistische wie auch die wissenschaftliche Rezeption haben immer wieder betont, dass die Vernichtung der europäischen Juden im Zentrum von Sebalds Werk stehe: Der Holocaust sei der »still-point« von Die Ausgewanderten (Gunther 2006), das »meta-narrative of the Holocaust [...] stands in the heart of Sebald’s work« (Williams 2001, 71).
