Zu Beginn des 16. Jh.s bezeichnet Erasmus von Rotterdam die Dummheit als ein ubiquitäres Phänomen, nämlich als »Kraft, die in der ganzen Welt wirkt« (Erasmus 1975, 13): eine Diagnose, die von der überwiegenden Zahl der Denker vor und nach ihm geteilt wird.
