Laut Tagebuch beginnt Raabe mit der romanlangen Erzählung am 19.1.1880 – der Titel bezieht sich auch auf die Heiligen des 20. Januar – und beendet die Niederschrift am 19.2.1881. Sie erscheint 1882 in Westermanns Monatsheften und im selben Jahr noch bei Westermann in Buchform.
