Die Familie als fundamentale Institution menschlichen Zusammenlebens ist eines der wiederkehrenden Themen und Probleme in Stifters Erzählen. Im sozial- und diskursgeschichtlichen Kontext des mittleren 19. Jahrhunderts meint »Familie als solche« (Hegel 1986, 336) vor allem die bürgerliche Kern- und Kleinfamilie, in der intime Beziehungen gepflegt und gestiftet, aber auch die »Keime des Staates« (Savigny 1840, 343) enthalten sein sollen.
