In offenkundiger Übereinstimmung mit der Grammatik des Outline style nach Flaxmans Muster, die sich zu jener Zeit exponentiell wachsend in Europa verbreitete, beanstandete Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), der sich 1801 in einem Ideenaustausch mit Ludwig Tieck (1773–1853) über die Ölgemälde in der Dresdner Gemäldegalerie befand, die materiellen Qualitäten der Farbe und pries mit nicht geringerer Entschiedenheit die reine Umrisszeichnung:
