Zusammenfassung

Seit der Herausbildung des Faches im späten 18. Jh. hat die Ethnologie zur ›Moderne‹ ein schwieriges Verhältnis. Das den öffentlichen wie wissenschaftlichen Diskurs oftmals prägende evolutionistische Entwicklungsmodell wurde nämlich keineswegs positiv bewertet, sondern vielmehr mit einer verklärten Idee des ›edlen Wilden‹ kontrastiert. In gewisser Weise definierte sich somit die Disziplin als Sachwalterin des Anti-Modernismus, die ihre Aufgabe primär darin sah, Einsprüche sowohl gegen Modernisierungstheorien als auch die Moderne selbst zu erheben. In jüngster Zeit wurde die ethnologische Zivilisationskritik unter dem Einfluss postkolonialer Theorien reformuliert und zu einer Kritik neoliberaler Expansionen und politischer Herrschaftsverhältnisse zugespitzt, wobei Konzepte einer ›alternativen‹, ›indigenen‹ oder ›verwobenen Moderne‹ geprägt wurden. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Entwicklung wurde auch der Gegenstand des Faches neu bestimmt.
