Der Ausdruck ›Nachhalt‹ entstammt der deutschen Forstwirtschaftslehre. Im Jahre 1713 veröffentlicht der Oberberghauptmann Hans Carl von Carlowitz die Schrift Sylvicultura oeconomica. Zur Zeit Carlowitz’ benötigt man für den Bergbau, die Verhüttung von Erzen, die Köhlerei und andere Zwecke große Mengen an Holz.
