Zusammenfassung
Will man den Kompositionsprozess bei einem Musiker des 19. Jahrhunderts rekonstruieren, so sind im Unterschied zu früheren Epochen zahlreiche Quellen erhalten, die eine solche Untersuchung erleichtern. Erschwerend hingegen wirkt der sich in Andeutungen verlierende, wenn nicht gar mystifizierende Ton, der sich nicht nur in den Äußerungen der Komponisten selbst findet, sondern auch in den Berichten von Personen aus deren Umfeld und ganz allgemein in schriftlichen Darstellungen, die unter den ästhetischen Prämissen des romantischen Denkens entstanden. Alle Beteiligten möchten den Schaffensprozess mit einer mythischen Aura umgeben und nachweisen, dass er einem Augenblick der Intuition, ja sogar der Erleuchtung entspringt. Die Wagner-Forschung weiß zum Beispiel, mit welcher Vorsicht man den diesbezüglichen Berichten des Komponisten begegnen muss, wie etwa seiner Darstellung der vorgeblichen Entstehung des Vorspiels zu Rheingold am Golf von La Spezia (Wiesend 1992).
