„… und einmal“, als Pilenz und Mahlke jung waren, wurde Mahlkes lebensgroßer Adamsapfel einer Katze gezeigt, die sich daraufhin auf diese ‚Maus‘ stürzte. Mit der Nacherzählung dieser Anekdote fängt Katz und Maus, die 1961 publizierte Novelle von Grass, an. Im Laufe der Geschichte wird nicht aufgeklärt, wer die Katze auf Mahlkes Adamsapfel aufmerksam gemacht hat.
