Zusammenfassung
Die Ontologie ist für John Rogers Searle kein Selbstzweck, sondern ein Mittel, das es uns erlaubt, das menschliche Bewusstsein in seiner spezifisch subjektiven Verfasstheit zu verstehen und dabei in der objektiven Welt zu verorten, die es sich selbst erschließt. Seine Arbeiten im Feld der Ontologie stehen in diesem Sinne im Dienst der »Versöhnung unseres Selbstverständnisses als bewusste und aufmerksame Wesen mit unserem Verständnis […] einer aus bewusstseinslosen, bedeutungslosen physikalischen Teilchen bestehenden Realität« (Searle 2014, 292).
