Hilary Putnam (1926–2016) ist seit der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ohne Zweifel einer der einflussreichsten Denker in der analytischen Tradition gewesen. Wir werden in diesem Artikel zwei seiner grundlegenden Beiträge im Bereich der Ontologie der geistigen Zustände hervorheben: den Funktionalismus und den externen Charakter des Inhalts geistiger Zustände.
