»What were the motives that induced or seduced Dr Thomas Mann, at one time among the most reserved of craftsmen, to become the intimate historian of his own first strictly contemporary novel – if indeed that is what he has become?« Im August 1949, Wochen nachdem dieser scharfe Angriff auf Thomas Manns autobiographisches Werk Die Entstehung des Doktor Faustus im Times Literary Supplement (TLS) erschienen war, erklärte der Patriarch von San Remo Drive, Pacific Palisades in einem Brief an Ida Herz, was er von dieser Kritik hielt: »Das übelwollende Zeug im Times Supplement über die ›Entstehung‹ habe ich rasch zerrissen.«
