Zusammenfassung

George Herbert Mead (1863–1931) kann als der vierte klassische Pragmatist gelten. Form gewann sein Denken in Auseinandersetzung mit grundlegenden Spannungen seiner Zeit. Wie die anderen Protagonisten des Pragmatismus entstammte Mead einem tiefprotestantischen Milieu. Sein Vater Hiram Mead war Pfarrer einer kongregationalistischen Gemeinde und später Theologieprofessor am Oberlin College in Ohio. Insbesondere Meads Mutter, die Pädagogin Elizabeth Storrs Mead (geb. Billings), hoffte, dass George die Familientradition fortsetzen und den pastoralen Weg einschlagen würde.

Vor allem zwei Entwicklungen ließen Mead jedoch an diesem Lebensentwurf zweifeln. Zum einen erschütterten verschiedene naturwissenschaftliche Durchbrüche – allen voran die darwinsche Revolution – das religiöse und philosophische Denken. Zum anderen ließen die massiven gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche und sozioökonomischen Probleme Zweifel an der Angemessenheit der traditionellen christlichen Konzepte von Moral und Verantwortung aufkommen. Hier liegen auch die Wurzeln von Meads sozialreformerischem Engagement.
