Zusammenfassung
Der Pragmatismus ist nicht gerade für seine Ethik bekannt. Zu Unrecht. Bei William James finden sich wichtige und exzellent vorgetragene ethische Einsichten. Bei John Dewey eine vollständig ausgearbeitete ethische Theorie, die nicht nur Pioniercharakter in ihrer Zeit hatte, sondern auch heute von höchster Relevanz ist. Charles Sanders Peirce liefert eine grobe Richtungsbestimmung, George Herbert Mead wichtige Erweiterungen, Oliver Wendell Holmes und James Hayden Tufts, die hier aus Platzgründen leider nur je kurz angesprochen werden können, sind – neben vielen anderen Denkerinnen (s. Kap. 49) und Denkern aus dem Dunstkreis des Pragmatismus – ebenfalls nicht zu unterschätzen. Gerade bei der Ethik des Pragmatismus gibt es auch heute noch wertvolle Schätze zu bergen. Der vorliegende Beitrag ist als grobe Schatzkarte zu verstehen, die nach Denkern sortiert die wichtigsten Fundorte skizziert.
