»Quality TV is best defined by what it is not. It is not ›regular‹ TV«, schreibt Robert J. Thompson (1996: 13) im Vorwort seines Standardwerks Television’s Second Golden Age. Um die Logik seiner Ex-negativo-Definition zu untermauern, verweist er im nachfolgenden Satz mit der Nennung von Twin Peaks (ABC, 1990–1991) auf eine Serie, die schon seinerzeit dafür gerühmt wurde, anders zu sein als alles, was man bis dahin im Fernsehen gesehen hatte.
