Zussamenfassung
Die Mathematik spielte in Platons Philosophie und der Akademie offenbar eine besondere Rolle. Zwar ist der Spruch, der angeblich über dem Eingang der Akademie stand, wonach keiner eintreten solle, der nicht Geometrie betrieben hat (»mêdeis ageometrêtos eisitô «), erst bei späteren Autoren überliefert (Iulian, Contra Heraclium 237d) und umstritten (Saffrey 1968, 67–87).
