Book cover Sophocles’ „Electra“ in Performance

Zusammenfassung

Is Sophocles’ Electra a play of triumphant revenge, or does it have a much darker, more pessimistic tone? As should immediately be evident to those reading our papers, we take opposing sides on this question, and our different interpretations generated considerable discussion. The workshops where our papers were presented took place on the day following a fine production of the Electra directed by David Downs, so we were able to discuss his interpretation while putting forward our own views. Then different methods of staging and acting were proposed and tried out, under the direction of Michael Cacoyannis and Peter Meineck. The total effect was, finally, electrifying!
