Zusammenfassung

Die dürftige Quellenlage läßt es nicht zu, ein schlüssiges Bild über die Genese des Artusstoffes etwa ab dem 6. Jh. bis zum Chronisten Geoffrey of Monmouth (1135/38) zu gewinnen. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, daß nicht einmal die Datierung der wenigen Quellen immer gesichert ist. Es ist daher teilweise nicht zu entscheiden, ob die Zeugnisse der Phase der Herausbildung der arthurischen Stoffe zuzurechnen sind, oder ob sie bereits unter dem Einfluß der dichterisch geformten Werke stehen. Es lassen sich drei dem walisischen und englischen Raum zugehörige Quellengruppen unterscheiden, in denen Artus vor der Chrétienschen Konzeption faßbar wird: 1. Die Legende, 2. volkstümliche Erzählungen und vor allem 3. die Historiographie.
