Zusammenfassung

Das Sprichwort ist ein Wortkunstwerk im kleinen, vielleicht das kürzeste und zugleich prägnanteste, das es in einer Sprache gibt. Prägungen wie ›Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm‹; ›Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen‹ ›Hunger ist der beste Koch‹ sind Sprachkleinode und gewissermaßen Miniaturkunstwerke. Sprichwörter bringen in der Regel eine klare Aussage: ›Aller Anfang ist schwer‹; ›Wer den Schaden hat, braucht für den Spott nicht zu sorgen‹; ›Was der Bauer nicht kennt, das frißt er nicht‹; ›Ende gut, alles gut‹. Einfache prosaische Sätze sind hier gültig, deutlich und ohne verborgene Hinter- oder Nebengedanken formuliert. Daneben gibt es aber zahlreiche bildhafte Sprichwörter, die einen Allgemeingedanken, der auch mehr oder weniger abstrakt ausdrückbar wäre, in ein plastisch-konkretes Anschauungsbild kleiden. Umgekehrt muß oft das Bild eines Sprichwortes erst wieder abstrahiert werden, wenn man den Sinn verstehen soll, z. B. ›Stehend Wasser stinkt, gebrauchter Pflug blinkt‹. Nur durch die Übertragung in die Abstrakta ›Faulheit — Fleiß‹ wird die Sprichwortantithese hier greifbar. Der volkstümlichen Ausdrucksweise fällt es schwer, abstrakte Begriffe wie z. B. Streit, Zank, Schwatzhaftigkeit, Zorn, Verleumdung metaphernlos zu umschreiben; und so heißt es eben für Streit und Zank z. B. ›In der Küche gibt’s zerbrochene Töpfe‹, ›Wenn man zwei stumpfe Messer aneinander wetzt, so werden sie beide scharf‹; für Schwatzhaftigkeit: ›Leere Schachteln klappern am lautesten‹; für Zorn: ›Wenn die Kanne voll ist, so läuft sie über‹; für Verleumdung: ›Wenn die Kohle nicht brennt, so schwärzt sie doch‹.
